Kenya vs Tanzania Safari: Which Country Is Right for You?

Comparing Kenya and Tanzania for a safari: wildlife, landscapes, crowds, cost, migration timing and how to combine both in one trip.

Kenya and Tanzania share borders, wildlife and the famous Great Migration, so choosing between them can be difficult. Both are excellent. The right answer depends on your timing, budget and the kind of trip you want.

The Great Migration

The wildebeest herds move in a loop between the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Maasai Mara in Kenya. The herds are typically in the Mara from roughly July to October, when the dramatic river crossings take place. They are in the Serengeti for much of the rest of the year, including the calving season in the south from about January to March. Movements vary with the rains, so no date is guaranteed.

Landscapes and Parks

  • Kenya: Maasai Mara, Amboseli with Kilimanjaro views, Tsavo, Samburu, Lake Nakuru and Mount Kenya. A wide variety in a compact area.
  • Tanzania: Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and Lake Manyara. Larger, more remote landscapes, with the Ngorongoro Crater as a standout.

Cost

Both countries have a wide range of prices. Tanzania’s park fees are often higher, particularly in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, while Kenya offers more budget and mid-range options. Compare itineraries rather than country averages.

Crowds

The Mara can be busy during the migration, though conservancies help reduce crowding. The Serengeti is vast, so vehicles are spread out, but Ngorongoro Crater can be busy at peak times.

Getting There and Add-Ons

  • Kenya has a major hub in Nairobi and easy coast extensions to Diani and Mombasa.
  • Tanzania pairs naturally with Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro treks.

Why Not Both?

You can combine them in one trip, for example the Maasai Mara and Amboseli in Kenya followed by the Serengeti and Ngorongoro in Tanzania. We offer Kenya and Tanzania packages and can arrange transfers and permits.
