The Big Five in Kenya are the lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. The phrase began with hunters, who considered these five the most dangerous animals to track on foot. Today it is a wildlife-watching checklist, and Kenya is one of the few places where you can realistically see all five in a single trip.
Lion
Lions live across most of Kenya’s savannah parks. The Maasai Mara is the best place to watch prides, with excellent sightings throughout the year. Amboseli, Tsavo, Samburu and Nairobi National Park also offer good chances. Lions sleep up to twenty hours a day, so early mornings and late afternoons give the best action.
Leopard
The leopard is the hardest of the five, a solitary and secretive cat that hides in trees and thickets. The Mara’s riverine woodlands, Samburu and Laikipia offer some of the best odds. Patience and a good guide matter more than luck.
Elephant
Elephants are widespread. Amboseli is famous for its large herds against Kilimanjaro, and Tsavo holds big populations. The Mara, Samburu and Laikipia are excellent too. For a gentle, up-close introduction, many travellers visit the Sheldrick orphanage.
Buffalo
Buffalo are common in many parks, found in herds that can number in the hundreds. They look calm but can be unpredictable, so keep your distance and stay in the vehicle. Good places include the Mara, Lake Nakuru and Aberdare; see our Aberdare guide.
Rhino
Rhinos are the rarest and the most important to protect. Kenya has both black and white rhinos, and they are best seen in protected sanctuaries and conservancies such as Lake Nakuru, Ol Pejeta, Lewa and Nairobi National Park. See our guide to rhinos in Kenya and the Ol Pejeta article.
Where to see all five
| Place | All five? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Maasai Mara | Yes, with luck | Rhinos are few and elusive |
| Ol Pejeta | Yes | Strong rhino sightings |
| Lewa and Laikipia | Yes | Walking and night drives in some areas |
| Lake Nakuru | Nearly | Rhinos and lions, few elephants |
| Nairobi National Park | Nearly | Rhinos, lions, leopards, buffalo |
Do not obsess over the list
The Big Five are charismatic, but Kenya is full of other remarkable animals, from cheetahs and giraffes to hyenas and hippos. Some guests spend a whole trip chasing a single species and miss everything else. Let your guide lead, and enjoy what appears. See our guide to animals in Kenya for the wider cast.
