Millions of travellers visit Kenya each year, and the vast majority have trouble-free trips. Like any destination, it pays to prepare and use common sense. This guide covers the main areas to think about.
Check Official Advice
Before you travel, read the current travel advice from your own government. Advisories can change, and they sometimes list specific regions to avoid, such as areas near the northern and eastern borders. Our standard safari routes in the main parks do not go to those areas.
On Safari
- Follow your guide’s instructions at all times.
- Stay inside the vehicle unless your guide says it is safe to get out.
- Keep a respectful distance from wildlife and do not feed animals.
- At camp, follow the rules about walking at night and ask for an escort if required.
In Nairobi and Other Cities
- Use hotel-arranged or trusted taxis and ride-hailing services.
- Do not walk alone at night or display expensive jewellery and cameras.
- Keep phones and bags out of sight near open car windows.
- Carry copies of your passport and keep the original in a safe place.
Health
- Talk to a doctor or travel clinic about vaccinations and malaria prevention.
- Drink bottled or treated water.
- Use insect repellent and sunscreen.
- Carry any prescription medicines and a basic first-aid kit.
Travel Insurance
Buy travel insurance that covers medical care and evacuation. It is worth the cost for any international safari trip.
Money and Documents
- Apply for your electronic travel authorisation (eTA) before departure.
- Notify your bank of your trip and carry a card plus some cash.
- Use ATMs inside banks or hotels where possible.
