A budget safari in Kenya is real, but it has a floor. Park fees, a vehicle and a driver-guide cost what they cost, so savings come from smart choices, not from corners cut on safety. Our cheapest trip, the 5-day budget Maasai Mara and Lake Naivasha safari, starts at $617 per person in low season. Our 7-day budget Kenya safari starts at $1,052 per person. Here is how to get prices like that, and what to watch for.
What a budget safari costs
| Trip | From, per person | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 3-day Amboseli safari | $559 | Amboseli with Kilimanjaro views, the shortest way in |
| 5-day budget Maasai Mara and Lake Naivasha safari | $617 | Low season. High season: $1,550 (6 guests), $1,670 (4 guests), $2,025 (2 guests) |
| 7-day budget Kenya safari | $1,052 | Maasai Mara, the lakes and Hell’s Gate |
| 5-day mid-range Maasai Mara trip | $1,506 | Mid-range, for comparison |
These are starting prices: the lowest per-person rate shown on each tour page, which is for the largest group size (and low season where a tour has seasons). Smaller groups and high season cost more, so check the tour page for the full price by group size. Your exact quote depends on dates and group size. Our full safari cost guide shows what each price covers.
1. Travel in the low season
April, May, early June and parts of November cost far less than July to October or Christmas. You trade some weather risk for lower rates and fewer vehicles at each sighting. There is a bonus in the Maasai Mara: the reserve charges non-resident adults $100 a day from 1 January to 30 June and $200 a day from 1 July to 31 December, so a three-day stay costs about $300 more in park fees in the second half of the year. See the best time to visit Kenya, Kenya in May and Kenya in November.
2. Share the vehicle
The vehicle and driver-guide are the biggest fixed cost, and they cost the same whether two or six people ride in the van. On the 5-day budget Maasai Mara and Lake Naivasha safari, the high-season price falls from $2,025 per person with 2 guests to $1,550 with 6, a saving of $475 each. Travelling as a couple or a small family? Tell us your group size and dates, and we will quote the shared price. Our private vs group safari guide explains the trade-offs.
3. Pick your parks carefully
Park fees differ widely. Non-resident adults pay $90 a day in Amboseli and Lake Nakuru, and $80 in Tsavo and Nairobi National Park, against $200 a day in the Mara in the second half of the year. Those rates have applied since the Kenya Wildlife Service increase of 1 October 2025 and can change. Amboseli, with big elephant herds and Kilimanjaro behind them, is excellent value. Our park comparison is the place to start.
4. Choose the right accommodation level
Budget trips use simpler lodges and camps. You sleep well and eat well, but you will not have a private plunge pool. If your priority is wildlife, not thread count, this is the easiest saving there is. Our luxury vs mid-range guide shows what each step up buys you.
5. Go for fewer days, or fewer parks
A three-day Amboseli trip is the cheapest way to see big game and the Kenyan landscapes people picture. Stretching a trip across too many parks adds long drives, not more wildlife. Two or three well-chosen parks beat five rushed ones.
6. Drive, do not fly, unless time is short
Bush flights save hours, but they add cost. A one-way flight to the Mara is commonly quoted at roughly $150 to $400 per person, depending on route and season. If your budget is tight and you have the days, the road is the cheaper option. Our road vs air guide compares them, and the flying safari guide explains when flying is worth it.
7. Skip the extras you will not use
A hot air balloon ride over the Mara is magical, but it is priced separately from your safari. Decide before you book whether it is worth the extra, so it does not become a surprise at the end of the trip.
8. Plan the costs outside your quote
Flights to Nairobi are not included. Neither are tips, travel insurance, alcohol, laundry or your Kenya eTA, which costs $30 at standard processing on the official site, etakenya.go.ke. A common tip guideline is $10 to $20 per person per day for your driver-guide. See our tipping guide and entry requirements guide.
What a very cheap quote may leave out
Be wary of a price that is far below the rest. Ask whether park fees, meals, drinking water and the driver-guide are included, what the vehicle is, and whether there is a minimum group size. Honest budget operators will answer plainly. On our tour pages, park fees are included and the exclusions are listed.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest Kenya safari you offer?
Our 5-day budget Maasai Mara and Lake Naivasha safari starts at $617 per person in low season, based on shared travel. In high season the same trip is $1,550 per person with 6 guests and $2,025 with 2. Our 7-day budget Kenya safari starts at $1,052 per person.
Is a budget safari safe?
Yes. The savings come from season, group size and accommodation level, not from cutting safety. You still travel with a professional driver-guide in a proper safari vehicle. See our Kenya safety guide.
When is the cheapest time to go on safari in Kenya?
April, May and early June, plus parts of November, are the low season. The Maasai Mara reserve also charges $100 a day from 1 January to 30 June, against $200 a day from 1 July to 31 December, so the first half of the year is cheaper before any operator discounts.
Are park fees included in your budget safari prices?
Yes. National park and reserve entrance fees are included in the price on our tour pages. Each page lists what is and is not included, so check it for your trip.
