Diani Beach, Kenya: Where to Stay, What to Do and When to Go

White sand, warm Indian Ocean water and easy days after a safari. Here is how to plan Diani Beach.

Palm trees against a blue sky on a Kenyan beach

Diani Beach is the stretch of white sand south of Mombasa that most people picture when they think of a Kenya beach holiday. The sand is soft, the water is warm, and the palms lean over the shore exactly the way the brochures promise. It is also one of the easiest places to unwind after a week of early game drives.

Where Diani is and how to reach it

Diani sits on Kenya’s south coast, about 30 kilometres from Mombasa. You can drive from Mombasa (the road crosses the Likoni channel) or take the Madaraka Express train to Mombasa and transfer on. The quickest option is a short flight from Nairobi to Ukunda airstrip, which is only a few minutes from the beach. If you are linking a safari with the coast, our guide to the Nairobi to Mombasa train explains the overland option.

What to do on the beach and around it

  • Swim and walk. The beach is long enough that you can find a quiet spot even in high season. Tides are noticeable, so check the time before you plan a swim.
  • Dolphins and snorkelling. Boat trips run from Shimoni to Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park and Wasini Island, where dolphins and coral reefs are the draw.
  • Kite surfing and watersports. The coast has reliable winds in two seasons, roughly January to March and June to August.
  • Colobus monkeys. Black-and-white colobus live in the coastal forest behind the hotels, and there is a conservation project that welcomes visitors.
  • Shimba Hills. A day trip inland takes you to a rainforest reserve known for sable antelope.

The best time to visit

The coast is warm all year. The driest, sunniest months are generally December to March and July to October. The long rains in April and May bring heavy showers and lower prices, and some small lodges close. If you are travelling on a budget, the shoulder months can be good value, but expect humid days.

Combining Diani with a safari

Most of our guests do the bush first and the beach last. After the early starts of a safari, a few days of nothing on Diani works well. A package such as our 6 Days Bush and Beach Safari covers both. For more ideas, read our safari and beach holiday guide.

Where to stay

Diani has everything from simple guesthouses to large all-inclusive resorts and boutique villas. Beachfront resorts give you the sand at your door, while places a short walk inland are quieter and cheaper. If you want restaurants and shops within walking distance, stay near the middle of the strip. For peace, go toward either end.

Practical tips

  • Pack reef shoes if you plan to swim near rocky patches.
  • Bring sun protection, because the equatorial sun is strong even on cloudy days.
  • Use licensed beach operators and agree prices before boat trips.
  • Malaria is present on the coast, so talk to a travel clinic before you leave. Our packing list covers the basics.
