Lake Bogoria and Lake Baringo: Flamingos, Hot Springs and Birdlife

Explore the Rift Valley lakes of Bogoria and Baringo: geysers, flamingos, boat trips and some of Kenya’s best birding.

North of Lake Nakuru, the Rift Valley holds two very different lakes. Lake Bogoria is a hot, alkaline lake with geysers and flamingos, while Lake Baringo is a freshwater lake famous for hippos, crocodiles and birds. Together they make a quiet, scenic stop for nature lovers.

Lake Bogoria

  • Hot springs and geysers: steaming vents along the shore make this one of the most dramatic lake landscapes in Kenya.
  • Flamingos: large flocks gather here when the water conditions are right. Numbers change over the years, so ask for current information when booking.
  • Wildlife: greater kudu, which is rare in other parks, along with zebra, impala and baboons.

Lake Baringo

  • Boat rides: traditional boat trips let you see fish eagles, hippos and crocodiles at close range.
  • Birding: more than 400 species are recorded here, making it a major destination for birders.
  • Cliff walks: nearby cliffs host nesting birds and give broad views of the lake.
  • Cultural visits: local communities such as the Pokot and Tugen welcome visitors.

Best Time to Visit

Both lakes can be visited all year. Early mornings are best for birdwatching and cooler for walking. The Rift Valley is hot, so bring sun protection.

How to Include Them

Most travellers combine Bogoria and Baringo with Lake Nakuru and the Maasai Mara. Two nights is usually enough to enjoy both lakes at an easy pace. Please note that lake levels have risen in recent years, and some lodges and shoreline roads have been affected, so we confirm current conditions before travel.
