Watamu, Kenya: Turtles, Reefs and Quiet Beaches

Marine parks, turtles and quiet beaches on Kenya’s north coast. Here is how to plan Watamu.

Watamu

Watamu is a small coastal town on Kenya’s north coast, and it is a good choice if you want a beach holiday that feels calm and a little wild. The bays are sheltered by coral reefs, the water is clear, and the nature around the town is better than almost anywhere else on the coast.

Why Watamu stands out

The big draw is the marine life. Watamu Marine National Park protects reefs where you can snorkel among colourful fish, and boat trips head out to sandbanks and reef edges. Between the beaches and the forest there is a lot to do, so it works for people who like to stay active.

Things to do

  • Snorkel and dive. Glass-bottom boats and snorkel trips are the easy way in. Divers can reach reefs and wrecks further out.
  • Support turtle conservation. A local rescue centre cares for injured sea turtles and runs a nest protection programme. A visit is both interesting and useful.
  • Walk the Mida Creek boardwalk. It passes through mangroves and is excellent for waders and migratory birds.
  • Explore Gedi Ruins. These are the remains of a Swahili town hidden in the forest, a short drive from Watamu.
  • Visit Arabuko Sokoke Forest. This is the largest surviving block of coastal forest in East Africa, and it is home to rare birds and small mammals. Read our Arabuko Sokoke Forest page for more.

When to visit

The most pleasant months are generally October to March, when it is dry and the sea is calm. The long rains in April to June bring humid weather and lower prices. Watamu is also popular for kite surfing when the winds are strong.

How to get there

Watamu is roughly two hours’ drive north of Mombasa, and the nearest airport is at Malindi. Many guests combine it with a safari by flying from Nairobi to the coast and transferring by road. If you also plan a southern beach stop, see Diani Beach.

Who it suits

Watamu suits couples, birdwatchers, divers and families who want nature as well as a beach. It is quieter than Diani, with a smaller choice of restaurants and nightlife. If you want more variety, add a couple of nights in Mombasa.
