Visiting a Maasai Village: Etiquette and What to Expect

How to visit a Maasai community respectfully: what happens during a village visit, etiquette, photography and how to make sure your visit benefits locals.

A cultural visit to a Maasai community is a highlight of many Kenya safaris. Done well, it is a chance to learn about a living tradition, hear stories and support local families. Here is how to make the most of it.

What Happens During a Visit

  • Welcome: you are greeted with a traditional song and dance, often including the famous jumping dance.
  • Village tour: you may see the enkang (a ring of homes built from sticks, mud and dung), the livestock enclosure and how families live day to day.
  • Demonstrations: fire-making, beadwork and explanations of cattle herding.
  • Market: handmade jewellery and crafts are sold directly by the community.

Etiquette

  • Ask before taking photos of people, especially children and elders. Some visits include a small fee for photography.
  • Greet politely and let your guide translate. Handshakes are common.
  • Dress modestly: covered shoulders and knees are respectful.
  • Listen first: ask questions with curiosity and avoid assumptions.
  • Buy crafts if you like them. Bargain gently and fairly.

Making Sure Your Visit Helps

Choose a community-run village rather than a staged stop with no benefit for locals. Ask how fees are shared and whether the money supports schools, health or water projects. Our team works with villages that share their income with the community.
