Getting to the Maasai Mara is the most common transfer in Kenya, and the first big decision on many trips: drive for five to six hours, or fly for about an hour. Neither is wrong. The right choice depends on your days, your budget and your luggage. Below is everything you need to know about Nairobi to the Maasai Mara, based on our own trips.

Going by road
Most of our safaris take the road, in a safari van or Land Cruiser with your driver-guide. You leave Nairobi in the morning, cross the Rift Valley escarpment and arrive in the Mara for a late-afternoon game drive. The journey takes about five to six hours, depending on traffic, road conditions and stops, and a conservancy camp may be much farther from the reserve gate than the map suggests.
Why choose it: it is included in your safari price, there is no luggage limit, and you see something of the country. Our 5-day budget Maasai Mara and Lake Naivasha safari, from $617 per person in low season, and our 5-day mid-range Maasai Mara trip, from $1,506, both travel by road.
A note on prices: the “from” prices in this guide are starting prices: the lowest per-person rate shown on each tour page, which is for the largest group size (and low season where a tour has seasons). Smaller groups and high season cost more, so check the tour page for the full price by group size.
The catch: it is a long day. If you arrive on a morning flight into Nairobi, you may be tired before you start.
Going by air
Scheduled flights leave from Wilson Airport, not JKIA, and land at an airstrip in or beside the reserve. The flight takes roughly 40 to 75 minutes depending on the airstrip and stops. Your driver-guide meets you on the strip, and you can often be on a game drive that afternoon. See our flying safari guide for how bush flights work and our JKIA and Wilson Airport guide for the transfer between the two airports.
Why choose it: you save most of a day, which matters on a short trip.
The catch: published fares of roughly $150 to $400 per person one way add $300 to $800 per person return. Luggage is usually limited to 15 kg in a soft bag, and weather can delay flights. Our 6-day luxury flying package starts at $2,520 per person.
A mixed option
You do not have to pick one. Many travellers drive to the Mara, enjoy the scenery on the way in, and fly back to Nairobi to save the return journey. Tell us what you want and we will price each option.
What about Amboseli?
Amboseli is closer. The road takes about four hours and the flight from Wilson Airport about 40 to 45 minutes. Our Nairobi to Amboseli guide covers both, and our Amboseli guide covers the park itself.
How to decide
- Under a week, or short on time: fly.
- Tight budget: drive. See our budget safari guide.
- Lots of luggage or camera gear: drive.
- Anyone who finds long drives hard: fly, or drive with extra stops.
Our safari cost guide shows how each choice changes the price.
The road from Nairobi to the Maasai Mara: what the drive is really like
The road trip from Nairobi to the Maasai Mara follows a clear route. You leave the capital on the highway towards the Rift Valley, stopping at a viewpoint over the escarpment, then continue through farmland and small towns to Narok, the last major town before the Mara. From Narok the road continues towards the reserve gates, and the final stretch can be rough and dusty, depending on which gate you use. Drive times vary with traffic leaving Nairobi, road works and the condition of the final section, so we plan for a full day and leave early. The scenery is part of the experience: you cross the Rift Valley floor, pass Maasai herders with cattle and slowly enter open grassland. Break the journey with a coffee stop and lunch, and keep snacks and water in the vehicle.
Flying from Nairobi to the Maasai Mara
Most scheduled flights to the Mara leave from Wilson Airport in Nairobi, not from the international airport. Scheduled light-aircraft services run daily to airstrips near the main camps, and the flight takes well under an hour in the air. Because you land at an airstrip close to your camp, you can often be on a game drive the same afternoon. Baggage limits are strict, typically a soft bag of around 15 kg, so pack accordingly. Weather can delay flights, and small aircraft carry few passengers, so book early in peak seasons. Read our airstrips and flights guide and airport guide for details.
Cost comparison: road versus air
Road transfers are normally included in your safari price when you travel in a private vehicle with a driver-guide. Flights add a significant cost per person each way, and you may also pay for a transfer to and from the airstrip. For two travellers, flying both ways can add the equivalent of a night or two at a good camp. Weigh this against the time you save. If your trip is short, flying often pays for itself in game-drive time. If you have a week or more, the road costs less and lets you see more of Kenya. See our safari cost breakdown to understand where money goes.
Which is better for families, seniors and photographers?
- Families with young children: flying reduces time in the car, but luggage limits can be tricky. A road trip with plenty of breaks works if children cope with long drives.
- Seniors: flying avoids a long, bumpy day. If you drive, ask for a comfortable vehicle and plan an overnight stop on the way.
- Photographers: road trips make it easier to carry heavy equipment, while flying requires careful packing. Consider a mixed option.
- Couples on a short trip: flying maximises time in the reserve.
Tips for getting to the Maasai Mara smoothly
- Start early, ideally before 7 am, to avoid Nairobi’s morning traffic.
- Keep valuables and cameras in the cabin of the vehicle, not in the boot or hold.
- Take motion-sickness tablets if you are prone, because the last section is bumpy.
- Bring a light jacket, a hat and sunscreen.
- Confirm your transfer pickup time and meeting point the day before.
- If you fly, arrive at Wilson Airport in good time and check your baggage allowance in advance.
Once you arrive, read our Masai Mara guide, rules and etiquette and park fees posts. To arrange a transfer or complete safari, contact our team.
A mixed option: drive one way, fly the other
Many guests combine both modes. Driving out on the way in lets you enjoy the Rift Valley scenery and a first look at rural Kenya, while flying back saves the long day on your last morning. This also helps with international flights, because a morning flight to Nairobi places you comfortably before an evening departure. If you reverse it, flying in gives you a full afternoon of game viewing on day one, and the road back lets you rest. Whichever you choose, tell us your flight times, and we will plan the schedule around them.
Nairobi to the Maasai Mara in different seasons
In the dry months, the road is dusty but quick, and flights run on schedule. During the long rains from March to May, parts of the road can become muddy, and flights may be delayed by low cloud. In peak migration season, traffic on the route and at park gates increases, so allow extra time. If you travel at Christmas or New Year, book flights and vehicles early. In every season, a flexible attitude and a guide who knows the road make the journey easier.
Is it worth stopping on the way?
A short stop at the Rift Valley viewpoint is almost always worthwhile, with its view across the valley floor and a chance to buy crafts. Some itineraries include a night at Lake Naivasha or Lake Nakuru on the way, which breaks the journey and adds wildlife. See our Naivasha and Hell’s Gate guide and the Lake Nakuru guide. Combined with the Mara, they make a rewarding route, as in the 4-day itinerary.
