Together, Tsavo East and Tsavo West form one of the largest protected areas in the world and the biggest safari region in Kenya. They sit on the road between Nairobi and Mombasa, which makes them an easy way to combine a safari with a beach holiday. Although they share a name, the two parks feel very different.
Tsavo East: Wide Open Plains
- Flat, open landscape with long views, ideal for spotting animals.
- Famous for elephants that dust themselves in red soil, giving them a rusty colour.
- The Galana River, a lifeline for wildlife, and the Lugard Falls rapids.
- Good for lions, buffalo, gerenuk, lesser kudu and dry-country birds.
Tsavo West: Hills, Springs and Lava
- More varied scenery, with volcanic hills, lava flows and green oases.
- Mzima Springs, where clear water filters through volcanic rock and hippos and fish can be seen.
- The Shetani lava flow and caves, a good stop for a short walk.
- Rhino Sanctuary and views toward Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days.
Which One Should You Choose?
If you want classic open-plains game viewing and big elephant herds, pick Tsavo East. If you prefer scenery, short walks and variety, pick Tsavo West. If you have four or five days, combine both with Amboseli for a full southern circuit.
Best Time to Visit
The dry seasons, from June to October and January to February, are best, as animals concentrate near rivers and waterholes. During the rains, the parks are green and quiet but some roads can be slow.
Safari Plus Beach
Tsavo is the natural link between a bush safari and the coast. After your final game drive, you can continue by road or arrange a transfer to Diani or Mombasa for a few days by the sea.
Practical Tips
- Tsavo is hot, so bring light clothing and a sun hat.
- Distances inside the parks are large. Plan at least two nights in each.
- Fuel, water and snacks are essential on long game drives, and your guide handles these.
