Safari Tipping Guide for Kenya: Who to Tip and How Much

A simple tipping guide for a Kenya safari: guidelines for guides, camp staff and drivers, how to give tips and what is considered fair.

Tipping is not compulsory in Kenya, but it is a normal and appreciated way to thank the people who make your safari memorable. Wages in tourism are modest, and tips are a real part of many staff members’ income. Here is a simple, flexible guide.

General Principles

  • Tip in cash, ideally in US dollars or Kenyan shillings, in clean notes.
  • Tip for good service. Amounts below are guidelines, not rules.
  • Give the tip personally, or use the staff box at the lodge.

Typical Guidelines

  • Driver-guide: around US$10 to 20 per day per vehicle, or more for exceptional service. Larger groups can split the amount.
  • Lodge or camp staff: US$5 to 10 per guest per day, placed in the communal tip box and shared among all staff.
  • Porters: US$1 to 2 per bag.
  • Restaurant servers: about 10 percent if service is not already included on the bill.
  • Specialist guides (walking guides, balloon crew): US$5 to 10 each, if you wish.

Tipping Your Driver-Guide

Your guide is with you for the whole safari. They spot animals, explain behaviour, handle logistics and keep you safe. Most guests tip them at the end of the trip. If you travel with Cherish Africa Safaris, you are welcome to ask us what is typical for your group size and length of stay.

Other Tips

  • Bring small notes so you do not need to ask for change.
  • Avoid tipping with coins or damaged or old US notes, which are often refused.
  • Do not feel pressured. If a service was poor, you can tip less.
