A flying safari swaps long drives for short flights in small aircraft. Instead of five or six hours on the road to the Maasai Mara, you can be in the reserve in about an hour, with a view of the Rift Valley on the way. It costs more, and it comes with luggage rules, so here is what to know before you decide. This guide covers flying safari in Kenya in detail, so you can plan with confidence.

Times and fares are typical figures from published guides, and they vary by airstrip, season and stops. We confirm the current numbers in your quote.

How bush flights work

Scheduled light aircraft leave from Wilson Airport in Nairobi, not from JKIA, the international airport. Small turboprops carry roughly 12 to 40 passengers and often make several stops, so you may touch down at another camp’s airstrip before yours. Airlines such as AirKenya and Safarilink fly these routes. Your driver-guide meets you at the airstrip. See our JKIA and Wilson Airport guide for how to get between the two.

Where you can fly

  • Maasai Mara: the most popular route, with several airstrips across the reserve.
  • Amboseli: a short hop from Wilson Airport.
  • Samburu and Laikipia: a big time saver for the north.
  • The coast: flights link Nairobi with Mombasa, Diani and Lamu. See our Lamu guide.

What it costs

Published guides quote roughly $150 to $400 per person one way, so a return trip to the Mara can add $300 to $800 per person. For a couple, that is $600 to $1,600 on top of the safari. Our 6-day luxury flying package starts at $2,520 per person and is built around these flights: Wilson Airport to Amboseli on day 1, then Amboseli to Wilson and on to the Maasai Mara, and back to Nairobi on day 6. Ask us to confirm in writing which flights are in your quote. For comparison, our 5-day mid-range Maasai Mara trip starts at $1,506 and our 5-day budget Maasai Mara and Lake Naivasha safari at $617 in low season, both by road.

A note on prices: the “from” prices in this guide are starting prices: the lowest per-person rate shown on each tour page, which is for the largest group size (and low season where a tour has seasons). Smaller groups and high season cost more, so check the tour page for the full price by group size.

Luggage rules

This is the part that catches people out. The commonly cited limit is 15 kg per person, including hand luggage, in a soft-sided bag. One 2026 guide gives a maximum bag size of about 60 x 35 x 25 cm. Hard suitcases may be refused on small aircraft, because they pack poorly into a small aircraft hold. If you bring more, ask us or your Nairobi hotel about storing the extra bag while you are away. Our packing list shows how to travel light.

When flying is worth it

  • You have a week or less and want the most time in the park.
  • You are visiting two far-apart regions, such as Amboseli and the Mara.
  • You or someone in your group finds long drives hard.
  • You are travelling in the high season, when time in the park matters most.

When to drive instead

  • You are on a tight budget.
  • You have ten days or more and enjoy seeing the country between parks.
  • You are bringing a lot of luggage or camera gear.

Many travellers do both: drive in, enjoy the scenery, and fly out to save the return journey. Our road vs air guide to the Mara compares the two in detail, and our safari cost guide shows how flights change the total.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a bush flight to the Maasai Mara cost?

Published guides quote roughly $150 to $400 per person one way, depending on route, airline and season. A return flight is therefore about $300 to $800 per person. Fares change, so we confirm the current price when we quote your trip.

How long is the flight from Nairobi to the Maasai Mara?

Roughly 40 to 75 minutes, depending on which airstrip you land at and how many stops the flight makes. Driving takes five to six hours.

What is the luggage limit on a bush flight?

The commonly cited limit is 15 kg per person including hand luggage, in a soft-sided bag. Hard suitcases may be refused on small aircraft. Check the exact rule with the airline for your booking.

Is flying worth the extra cost?

If you have a week or less, or you dislike long drives, usually yes: you gain most of a day in the park. If you have ten days or more and a tight budget, the road is cheaper and lets you see the Rift Valley and Narok on the way.

Are bush flights safe?

Scheduled bush flights are a routine part of safari travel in Kenya, operated by established airlines such as AirKenya and Safarilink. Weather can cause delays, so leave buffer time before an international departure.
