A 3 day Kenya safari is short, but with a sensible plan it can be a wonderful introduction. The trick is to avoid cramming. Pick one park, fly if you can, and spend as much time as possible with wildlife. Here are two realistic ways to do it.
Option A: Maasai Mara fly-in
Day 1: Nairobi to the Mara. Take an early flight from Wilson Airport to a Mara airstrip, around an hour. Check in, have lunch and head out on an afternoon game drive. Expect lions, elephants, giraffes and plenty of plains game. Return for a sundowner and dinner.
Day 2: A full day in the Mara. Start before sunrise for the best light and predator activity. Return for breakfast, rest through midday and go out again late afternoon. If the budget allows, add a sunrise hot air balloon ride; see the balloon safari guide.
Day 3: Morning drive and return. A final dawn game drive, breakfast and flight to Nairobi in time for onward connections. Do not book an international flight too tightly; see our airport guide.
Option B: Amboseli by road or air
Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli, four to five hours by road or 45 minutes by air. Afternoon game drive among elephants.
Day 2: Sunrise drive for Kilimanjaro views and elephants, a midday rest, then an afternoon drive. Visit a Maasai community if you like; see Maasai village etiquette.
Day 3: Morning game drive, then return to Nairobi. Read our guide on getting to Amboseli.
What to know before booking
- Three days means two nights in camp. Flying saves hours that would otherwise be spent on the road.
- The Mara is best from July to October for the migration. See the migration guide.
- Amboseli is excellent in dry months for views of Kilimanjaro.
Is three days enough?
It is enough to see good wildlife and feel the atmosphere, but not enough to cover Kenya. If you can stretch to five days, you can add a second park; see our 5 day itinerary. For an in-depth plan, read the 7-day itinerary.
Budget
Flights add cost, so a road-based trip to Amboseli or Lake Nakuru may be cheaper. See budget ideas. Send us your dates and we will price a few options.
Quick answers
Is three days enough for a Kenya safari?
It is enough for a good introduction in one park, ideally the Mara by air, but not enough to see the country.
Should I fly or drive on a 3-day trip?
Fly if you can, since driving can use up a full day each way.
Which park is best for three days?
The Maasai Mara for big cats and migration, or Amboseli for elephants and Kilimanjaro views.
