Distance and time by road

Amboseli is about 240 kilometres from Nairobi. Driving takes four to five hours depending on traffic, the route and the final track to your camp. There are two common routes. One goes via the main road to Namanga, then turns onto a track to the park. The other passes through Emali and Loitokitok towards Kimana. Both are mostly tarmac, with a rougher final section. Your driver will choose according to the current conditions and your lodge location.

Park gates

Entry points include Meshanani and Kimana, among others. Which one is used depends on your camp. The drive from the gate to the swamps and lodges can take another hour or more, which is a game drive in itself. Read the Amboseli guide to see what you might see on arrival.

By air

Daily scheduled flights from Wilson Airport reach Amboseli in about 45 minutes. This is a great option if you have limited time or want to avoid a long road trip. Baggage rules are strict; check our flying safari article before packing.

Combining with other places

  • Tsavo West. The road from Amboseli to Tsavo West is a scenic connection; read the Tsavo guide.
  • The coast. Many trips continue to the coast by road or via a flight from Nairobi.
  • Maasai Mara. Fly back to Nairobi and on to the Mara, or compare the two in Mara vs Amboseli vs Tsavo.

Best time for the transfer

Start early. The road is dusty in dry months and slippery after rain, and mornings give the best chances of seeing Kilimanjaro clear of cloud. Check the weather guide for seasonal patterns.

Practical tips

  • Bring a scarf or mask for dust.
  • Keep cameras ready; elephants can appear along the final stretch.
  • Use the bathroom in Nairobi or at a town stop; facilities are limited later.
  • Carry small cash for roadside purchases.
