Kenya Safari in July: What to Expect

July is a peak safari month in Kenya. Here is the weather, wildlife and what to book early.

Kenya Safari In July

July is one of the best months for a safari in Kenya. The rains have gone, the grass is shorter, and animals gather near water, which makes them easier to find. It is also the start of the busiest tourist season, so it pays to plan early. Here is what to know about Kenya safari in july before you book.

Weather in July

It is dry and mostly sunny across the main safari areas. Days are warm but not hot, and mornings and evenings can be cool, especially in the highlands and around Nakuru and Naivasha. Pack layers and a light jacket. Rain is uncommon, though not impossible.

The Great Migration

Wildebeest and zebra usually begin arriving in the Maasai Mara from the Serengeti in July, with river crossings becoming more common as the month goes on. Timing changes from year to year, so no operator can promise a crossing on a specific day. The safest plan is to stay three or more nights in the Mara. Read our Great Migration guide and the Masai Mara guide for more detail.

Where else to go

  • Amboseli. Dry season means dusty plains, big elephant herds and clear mornings for views of Kilimanjaro. See our Amboseli guide.
  • Lake Nakuru. Rhinos, buffalo and birds are excellent, and the road trip from Nairobi is short.
  • Samburu. The northern reserve is hot and dry, and wildlife concentrates along the river.
  • Tsavo. Dry-season viewing is productive, and crowds are lower than in the Mara. Read about Tsavo East.

Prices and booking

July is peak season, so lodge and camp rates are at their highest and the best properties sell out early. Book several months ahead if you want specific camps near the Mara River. If your dates are flexible, shoulder months can offer better value, as our best time to visit Kenya article explains.

Is it crowded?

The Mara can get busy at popular crossing points, with many vehicles gathered in one place. A good guide knows how to avoid the crowds and may suggest quieter spots or a conservancy stay. Our Mara reserve vs conservancies article is useful here.

What to pack

Neutral clothing, a warm layer for dawn drives, a hat, sunscreen, binoculars and a dust cover for your camera. Our packing checklist covers the full list.

Sample itineraries

Our 5 Days Maasai Mara Migration, Nakuru and Naivasha Safari is a good fit for July, and longer routes such as the 12 Day Complete Circuit cover several parks in one trip.
