Itinerary

12-Day Kenya Wildlife Safari Experience: The Complete Circuit

Day 1: Nairobi to Samburu National Reserve

Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Nairobi, heading north past Mount Kenya to the rugged Samburu National Reserve. This semi-arid wilderness is home to species found only in this region, such as the Grevy’s Zebra and Gerenuk. Upon arrival, check into Samburu Sopa Lodge and enjoy a delicious lunch overlooking the landscape. In the afternoon, set out on your first game drive to explore Samburu’s dramatic scenery before returning to the lodge for dinner.

Day 2: Full Day Exploration of Samburu

Wake up to the sounds of the bush and enjoy an early morning game drive when wildlife is most active. Samburu is famous for its leopards and large elephant herds that dig for water in the dry riverbeds. Return to the lodge for a relaxed breakfast and leisure time by the pool. In the afternoon, head back out to search for the “Samburu Special Five” and enjoy the stunning sunset over the Ol Olokwe mountain.

Day 3: Samburu to Ol Pejeta Conservancy

After breakfast, depart for the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a pioneering conservation area famous for its Chimpanzee Sanctuary and the last two remaining Northern White Rhinos. On arrival, check in at Sweetwaters Serena Camp and enjoy lunch overlooking the camp’s busy waterhole. The afternoon takes you deep into the conservancy for a game drive, where sightings of lions, black rhinos, and elephants await.

Day 4: Ol Pejeta to Lake Nakuru National Park

Travel through the scenic Great Rift Valley to Lake Nakuru National Park, renowned for its rhino sanctuary and birdlife. Check into Nakuru Maili Saba Camp for lunch before embarking on an afternoon game drive. Explore the acacia forests to spot tree-climbing lions, leopards, and endangered Rothschild giraffes. The lake shores are often lined with pelicans and flamingos, offering great photo opportunities.

Day 5: Lake Nakuru to Maasai Mara National Reserve

Today you journey to the legendary Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya’s most famous safari destination. En route, stop in Narok town for a cultural break. Arrive at Mara Orngatuny King Camp in time for lunch. In the afternoon, head out for your first Maasai Mara game drive, scanning the vast plains for the Big Five—Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino, and Buffalo.

Day 6: Full Day in Maasai Mara

Rise early for a thrilling morning game drive across the endless savannah. With a packed picnic lunch, spend the entire day exploring the Mara. This reserve is known for its high density of predators, including cheetahs and hyenas. If traveling during the migration season (July-Oct), you may witness the dramatic river crossings. Even off-season, the wildlife viewing is spectacular.

Day 7: Another Full Day in Maasai Mara

Enjoy a second full day in the Mara to explore different sections of the reserve or focus on photography. You can also opt for a Hot Air Balloon Safari (extra cost) for a bird’s-eye view of the plains at sunrise. Visit the Mara River to see hippos and crocodiles basking in the sun. Return to the camp in the evening for storytelling around the campfire.

Day 8: Maasai Mara to Lake Naivasha

Bid farewell to the Mara and drive to the tranquil Lake Naivasha, Kenya’s highest freshwater lake. Check in at Lake Naivasha Country Club and enjoy a relaxing lunch. In the afternoon, you can opt for a boat safari to spot hippos and fish eagles, or visit Crescent Island Sanctuary for a guided walking safari among giraffes and zebras (optional activities).

Day 9: Lake Naivasha to Amboseli National Park

Set off early for Amboseli National Park, world-famous for its massive elephant herds and breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro. After lunch at Amboseli Sopa Lodge, enjoy an afternoon game drive. Watch elephants dust-bathing in the dry lake beds and capture the iconic shot of wildlife against the snow-capped peak.

Day 10: Amboseli to Tsavo West National Park

Depart for Tsavo West National Park, known for its rugged volcanic landscape and the Mzima Springs. Check in at Tauso Tsavo Eco Lodge and enjoy lunch. Your afternoon game drive includes a visit to the Shetani Lava Flows and the springs, where you can view hippos underwater. Keep an eye out for the elusive leopard and the beautiful lesser kudu.

Day 11: Tsavo West to Tsavo East National Park

Cross over into the vast Tsavo East National Park, famous for its “Red Elephants” and flat savannahs. Check in at Ashnil Aruba Lodge. Spend the afternoon tracking the unique maneless lions of Tsavo and large herds of buffalo near the Aruba Dam. The landscape here is starkly beautiful and different from the other parks.

Day 12: Tsavo East to Nairobi

Enjoy a final early morning game drive as you exit the park. Begin your return journey to Nairobi, arriving in the afternoon. You will be dropped off at your hotel, residence, or the airport, marking the end of your incredible 12-day Kenyan wildlife experience.
