Quick answer: Spend four to seven nights on Zanzibar after a five to ten day safari, plus one night in Stone Town if you like culture. Choose Nungwi or Kendwa for swimming at every tide, Paje or Jambiani for kitesurfing and quiet village life, and Matemwe for a secluded stay near Mnemba Atoll. The best months are June to October and December to March; March to May and November bring the rains. Direct flights from Nairobi take about 1 hour 40 minutes. Here is what to know about Zanzibar after a safari before you book.
Details checked in October 2026. Flight schedules, rain patterns and resort standards change, so confirm current details before you book.
A week of early game drives is rewarding but tiring, and many travellers find that the best way to end a safari is a few days doing nothing at all. Zanzibar is the classic answer: warm Indian Ocean water, white-sand beaches, and a historic old town, all within a short flight of Nairobi or the northern Tanzanian parks.
The island is not one beach, though. The east and north coasts behave very differently, and choosing the wrong one is the most common mistake. This guide explains how to match a beach to your trip, how many nights to allow, and when to go.
Zanzibar areas at a glance
| Area | Character | Swimming | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nungwi (north) | Lively and social, with a working fishing village where dhows are built by hand | Swimmable at all tides, deep water | Couples, families, divers |
| Kendwa (north-west) | Slower pace, sunsets, upmarket stays | Swimmable at all tides; the best for swimming | Social travellers, luxury seekers, photographers |
| Paje (south-east) | Kitesurfing hub with a relaxed, bohemian feel | Limited at low tide as the lagoon recedes | Kitesurfers, active travellers |
| Jambiani (south-east) | Quiet village life and seaweed farms | Long flats at low tide; big tide swings | Slow travellers, photographers, budget stays |
| Matemwe (north-east) | Secluded and peaceful | Tides matter; snorkelling trips to Mnemba | Honeymooners and snorkellers |
| Stone Town (west) | Old town and markets | Not a beach stop | Culture before or after the coast |
Tides decide more than most people expect
The east coast, including Paje and Jambiani, has a wide lagoon that empties at low tide. You can walk for hundreds of metres across sand and seaweed, which is beautiful but not what many people picture when they imagine swimming. The north and north-west, around Nungwi and Kendwa, stay swimmable at every tide. If you want to swim whenever you feel like it, choose the north. If you want kitesurfing, big skies and a quieter feel, choose the south-east. Whichever you choose, ask your resort for its tide times.
Stone Town: worth one night
Stone Town was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 as an outstanding example of a Swahili trading town, with coral rag and mangrove timber buildings dating mostly from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is a labyrinth of alleys, doors and markets, and it tells the story of centuries of trade across the Indian Ocean, including the slave trade. One night is enough for most people to walk the old town, see the waterfront at sunset and visit a spice market. More than a couple of nights usually feels long.
How many nights do you need?
- Three nights: a quick reset, best in one resort.
- Four to seven nights: the sweet spot after a five to ten day safari. Enough to relax, snorkel and explore.
- Eight or more: only if you want to split between two coasts, for example north and south-east.
Add one night in Stone Town at the start or end if culture appeals.
When to go
| Months | What to expect |
|---|---|
| December to March | Hot, drier and sunny; a prime beach season |
| March to May | Main rains, with heavy afternoon downpours; many resorts discount or close |
| June to October | Dry, cooler and breezy; the best winds for kitesurfing in the south-east |
| November | Short rains with brief downpours; good value |
If your safari is in the Mara from July to October, the dry season beach months line up well. For help timing the safari side, see our best time to visit Kenya guide.
Getting there from Nairobi
Direct flights between Nairobi and Zanzibar take about 1 hour 40 minutes. Several carriers operate the route, including Kenya Airways and Air Tanzania, with multiple departures a day; Safarilink and other light-aircraft operators also fly from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport in about 1.5 hours. If you finish a Tanzanian safari at Arusha or Kilimanjaro, you can connect to Zanzibar by air as well. Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so check current visa requirements for your passport before you travel.
Zanzibar or Kenya’s coast?
Kenya’s own coast is a strong alternative, particularly if you want a shorter transfer or prefer to keep the whole trip in one country. Diani offers a long white-sand beach, and you can reach it by flight or by the SGR train and a road transfer; see our Diani Beach guide and the safari and beach holiday guide. Zanzibar tends to win on old-town culture, island atmosphere and the choice of coasts, while Diani wins on simplicity and on combining easily with Tsavo. Our guide to the SGR train to Mombasa explains the overland option.
Combining Zanzibar with Kenya and Tanzania
The simplest route is Kenya safari first (Mara, Amboseli, Samburu), then Zanzibar. A fuller route adds Tanzania’s northern parks before the island, which is how our longest itinerary is built. For the safari side, compare Kenya and Tanzania and read the combination guide.
Mistakes we see travellers make
- Choosing a south-east resort and then being disappointed by low-tide swimming.
- Booking the beach during the main rains without a flexible plan.
- Squeezing two coasts into a four-night stay.
- Flying out on the same day as a long game drive. Allow a night in between if you can.
- Skipping Stone Town completely and missing the cultural side of the trip.
Tell us how many days you have and what you want from the beach, and we will suggest an area and a route.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many days should I spend in Zanzibar after a safari?
Four to seven nights is the sweet spot after a five to ten day safari. Add one night in Stone Town if you want to see the old town.
Which Zanzibar beach is best for swimming?
Nungwi and Kendwa in the north and north-west stay swimmable at all tides. The east coast, including Paje and Jambiani, has a lagoon that recedes at low tide, which limits swimming.
What is the best time to visit Zanzibar?
June to October and December to March are the best months. The main rains fall from March to May, with a shorter rainy period in November.
How long is the flight from Nairobi to Zanzibar?
A direct flight from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport takes about 1 hour 40 minutes. Flights from Wilson Airport on light aircraft take about 1.5 hours.
Is Zanzibar better than Diani for a beach extension?
It depends. Zanzibar offers old-town culture and a choice of coasts, while Diani is simpler to reach and combines easily with Tsavo. Both are good after a safari.
Is Stone Town worth visiting?
Yes. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2000, and one night is enough for most visitors to see the old town, waterfront and markets.
