Kenya in September: Migration Without the Peak Crush

Kenya in September offers migration action, dry weather and slightly smaller crowds than August. See what to expect in the Mara, Amboseli and on the coast.

Big Cats – Lions in the open savannah - Animals In Kenya

Kenya in September is what many seasoned safari-goers quietly recommend. The migration is usually still in the Maasai Mara, the weather is dry and warming up, and the school-holiday rush of July and August has eased. You get much of the same drama with a little more breathing room.

Migration timing

Herds typically remain in the Mara through September, moving between the northern plains and the river as grazing allows. Crossings still happen, though the herds begin to drift back south later in the month or in October, depending on rain in Tanzania. As ever, nature keeps its own diary. Spending several nights in the Mara gives you the best chance. For background, our migration guide and the Kenya versus Tanzania comparison explain where the herds go and why.

Weather and light

Days are warm and sunny and nights cool, though it is not as cold as July. Dust increases as the dry season stretches on. The plains are golden and the skies are often clear, which makes September one of the most photogenic months of the year. Check our safari photography tips for how to handle bright light and dusty air.

Smaller crowds, same wildlife

Compared with August, you may notice fewer vehicles at the crossing points and a bit more availability at camps. It is still busy, so book early, but you will likely find better value than the absolute peak weeks.

Beyond the Mara

  • Amboseli. Elephants move across dry plains, and Kilimanjaro is often clear. See the Amboseli guide.
  • Tsavo. Red elephants and a vast wilderness feel; read our Tsavo guide.
  • Coast. September is warm, with moderate humidity and good snorkelling, perfect after a safari.

Who should choose September?

This month works for most travellers, especially couples, families with older children and photographers. If you are flexible about dates, ask for the second half of the month when the school-holiday travellers have left. It is a sweet spot between wildlife drama and a calmer pace.

Tell us what you want to see and how long you have, and we can suggest a plan that keeps travel days sensible and your time in the field as long as possible.
