The Karen Blixen Museum in Nairobi is a graceful farmhouse at the foot of the Ngong Hills, once the home of the Danish writer who wrote under the name Isak Dinesen. It is one of the most atmospheric places in the capital and an easy half-day visit for anyone interested in history, literature or colonial-era Kenya.
The story behind the house
Karen Blixen moved to Kenya in 1913 and, a few years later, settled on a coffee farm near Nairobi, where she lived for about seventeen years. Her memoir Out of Africa, published in 1937, describes the land, her staff and the friendships she formed. The 1985 film of the same name, starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford, made the story world-famous and used the house and its surroundings as a location. The suburb of Karen, where the museum stands, takes its name from her.
What you will see
The house is simple but elegant, with a long veranda, wooden floors and rooms furnished in the style of the early twentieth century. A guide takes you through the dining room, study and bedrooms, pointing out original items and stories. The gardens are pretty, and the view towards the Ngong Hills is lovely. Some of the exhibits reflect the colonial context in which Blixen lived, so it is a good place to reflect on how Kenya’s history has been told.
Practical information
- Location: Karen, around 10 kilometres from the city centre.
- Time needed: About an hour for the tour and gardens.
- Best time: Mornings are quieter; weekends and school holidays are busier.
- Fees: Entrance charges differ for residents and visitors. Check the National Museums of Kenya for current prices.
- Nearby food: Karen has several good cafés and restaurants.
Pair it with
The museum fits neatly with a Karen and Langata day: the Sheldrick elephant nursery, the giraffe centre and Giraffe Manor. In the late afternoon, take a short walk or drive towards the Ngong Hills. Our Nairobi stopover guide has more.
Is it worth it?
If you love books, old houses or quiet gardens, absolutely. If you have only one day in Nairobi and want wildlife, choose the elephant orphanage and the national park first, then add the museum if time allows. Whatever you choose, give yourself a relaxed pace; Nairobi traffic can eat a morning.
Read Out of Africa before you go, or after, and think about how much the country has changed since then. We can add a museum stop to any Nairobi itinerary.
