Nairobi is the starting point for almost every Kenya safari, and a day or two in the city is well worth your time. It is the only capital in the world with a national park on its doorstep, and it offers wildlife, culture and good food.
Nairobi National Park
Just a few kilometres from the city centre, Nairobi National Park is home to lions, giraffes, zebra, buffalo, hippos and one of the best black rhino populations in Kenya. You can see wildlife with skyscrapers in the background. A half-day game drive is a good way to start or end a trip.
Giraffe Centre
At the Giraffe Centre in Langata you can feed endangered Rothschild’s giraffes from a raised platform and learn about their conservation. It is a favourite with families.
Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Orphanage
The orphanage cares for young elephants and rhinos that have lost their mothers, and visitors can watch the daily feeding and mud bath at set times. Booking in advance is usually needed, so check the current visiting arrangements.
Karen Blixen Museum and Bomas of Kenya
- The Karen Blixen Museum shows the colonial-era farmhouse that inspired a famous book and film.
- Bomas of Kenya presents traditional dance and village life from several Kenyan communities.
Food and Shopping
Try Kenyan dishes such as nyama choma (grilled meat), ugali and sukuma wiki. Maasai markets and craft stores are good for souvenirs, beadwork and fabrics. Bargain politely.
