Amboseli National Park Guide: Elephants Under Kilimanjaro

Everything you need to know about Amboseli: famous elephant herds, Kilimanjaro views, the best time to visit, where to stay and how to get there from Nairobi.

Amboseli National Park sits in southern Kenya, right on the Tanzanian border, and offers one of the most iconic safari images in Africa: big-tusked elephants walking across the plains with snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro behind them. It is compact, easy to reach from Nairobi, and a favourite for first-time visitors and photographers.

Why Visit Amboseli?

  • Elephants up close: Amboseli is known for its large, relaxed elephant herds, which have been studied for decades. Game drives often put you within a few metres of them.
  • Kilimanjaro views: Africa’s highest mountain rises on the southern horizon. Clouds often hide it by mid-morning, so the clearest views are at sunrise and sunset.
  • Open landscapes: flat plains, seasonal swamps and dry lake beds make animals easy to spot and photograph.
  • Maasai culture: the park is surrounded by Maasai community land, so cultural visits are easy to add.

What You Can See

Besides elephants, expect buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, hippo, hyena and plenty of antelope. Lions and cheetah are present, and the swamps attract many bird species, including pelicans, crowned cranes and kingfishers. Leopards and rhinos are much harder to find here, so manage expectations on those.

Best Time to Visit

  • June to October (dry season): the best wildlife viewing, as animals gather around the swamps and water sources. Skies are clearer for Kilimanjaro.
  • January to February: a shorter dry spell, also very good.
  • March to May and November: rainy periods. The park is greener and quieter, lodges can be cheaper, but roads can be muddy and views of the mountain less reliable.

Getting There

Amboseli is roughly a four to five hour drive from Nairobi by road, depending on traffic and the route taken. Many guests drive in a 4×4 safari vehicle, while others fly from Wilson Airport to the park’s airstrips. A common plan is two nights, which gives you three game drives and time for sunrise on the mountain.

Where to Stay

Options range from simple tented camps to comfortable lodges with mountain-facing rooms. Choose one close to the main gate and swamps if your time is short, as driving distances inside the park add up. We match accommodation to your budget and can arrange upgrades if you want the Kilimanjaro view from your tent.

Combine Amboseli With Other Parks

Amboseli pairs naturally with Tsavo West and Tsavo East on a route toward the coast, or with the Maasai Mara for a classic Kenya circuit. A short Amboseli extension also fits well before a beach stay at Diani.

Tips for Your Visit

  • Take the early drive: wildlife is active and the mountain is usually visible.
  • Bring binoculars and a lens of 200 mm or more.
  • Dust is common in the dry season, so protect camera gear.
  • Park fees change from time to time, so we confirm current rates when quoting.
