Kakamega Forest, in western Kenya, is the country’s only true tropical rainforest. It is a remnant of the vast forest that once stretched across equatorial Africa, and it feels completely different from the savannah parks most visitors know.
What Makes It Special?
- Birds: hundreds of species, including several that are found in few other places in Kenya, such as turacos, hornbills and the great blue turaco.
- Primates: blue monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, black-and-white colobus and, with luck, other forest primates.
- Butterflies and insects: a rich variety of colourful species.
- Forest atmosphere: tall trees, creepers and shaded trails, ideal after several days of open-plains game drives.
Activities
- Guided forest walks, including sunrise birdwatching.
- Short hikes to viewpoints such as Lurhasi Hill.
- Night walks to look for forest creatures, where available.
Best Time to Visit
Kakamega is wet for much of the year, so prepare for rain at any time. The best birding is often early in the morning, and January to February and June to September are usually the driest months.
Getting There
Kakamega is in western Kenya and fits well as an extension after the Maasai Mara, either by road or by flying to Kisumu or Kakamega airstrip. Plan at least one full day in the forest.
What to Pack
