Kenya in February: Hot, Dry and Great for Big Cats

Kenya in February brings hot, dry weather, excellent predator sightings and good beach days. See what to expect in the parks, on the coast and on Mount Kenya.

Big Cats – Lions in the open savannah - Animals In Kenya

Kenya in February is hot, mostly dry and wonderfully photogenic. It is the tail end of the first dry season, which means the grass is shorter, the dust is up, and predators have fewer places to hide. If you have ever wanted to watch a cheetah scan the plains for a gazelle, this is a very good time to do it.

Weather and what it means for your trip

February is among the warmest and driest months of the year. Daytime temperatures in the Mara and Samburu are high, and the midday sun is strong, so most guides plan long breaks between a dawn drive and an afternoon one. Nairobi stays comfortable thanks to altitude. The coast is hot and sticky but the sea is inviting. The long rains do not usually begin until March or April, so roads are generally in good shape.

Where the animals are

In the Maasai Mara, the migration herds are still south in Tanzania, so the show belongs to resident wildlife. Lions rest through the heat, then move at dusk, and leopards are often seen along the riverine trees. Elephants drift toward water in Amboseli and Tsavo, and Lake Nakuru’s shoreline can host rhinos, buffalo and many birds. For a full picture of the park, our Lake Nakuru guide helps with planning.

A month for the mountains and hills

February is one of the better months for walking in the highlands. Mount Kenya’s climbing routes are usually clearer than during the rains, and the Aberdares and Hell’s Gate are pleasant for hiking. Read about climbing and visiting Mount Kenya if you want to add altitude to your trip. Pair a hike with a few quiet days at Lake Naivasha, covered in our Naivasha and Hell’s Gate guide.

Beach time

The north-east monsoon winds keep the coast warm and fairly dry in February, so it is a classic month for diving, snorkelling and long walks on white sand. See the Diani Beach guide or the Watamu guide for places to stay and things to do.

Practical tips for February

  • Carry a refillable water bottle and a wide-brimmed hat; the sun is stronger than it feels.
  • Book morning drives; animals are more active before the heat.
  • Expect dust. A light scarf or buff helps in open vehicles.
  • Valentine’s week is popular with couples, so reserve romantic camps early. Our Kenya safari honeymoon article has ideas.

The short verdict

February suits travellers who prefer certainty. You trade the drama of the river crossings for dry roads, clear skies and animals that are easy to find. It is also a comfortable month to combine a safari with a beach stay in one trip.
