Kenya is one of the best birding countries in Africa, with more than 1,000 bird species recorded. A varied landscape of lakes, forests, savannah and coast means you can see a huge range of birds in a single trip, even if you are not a specialist.
Top Birding Destinations
- Lake Nakuru: pelicans, storks, eagles and, depending on the season, flamingos.
- Lake Bogoria and Lake Baringo: flamingos, kingfishers, hornbills and many dry-country species. See our guide to these Rift Valley lakes.
- Lake Naivasha: fish eagles, cormorants and many waterbirds, easily seen on a boat ride.
- Samburu: northern specialists such as the vulturine guineafowl, Somali bee-eater and golden-breasted starling.
- Kakamega Forest: forest birds found nowhere else in Kenya, including hornbills, turacos and many species typical of western African rainforest.
- Maasai Mara: raptors, secretarybirds, ostrich and the colourful lilac-breasted roller.
- Coast: Arabuko-Sokoke Forest and Tsavo parks for specialist species.
Best Time of Year
Birding is good all year. From November to April, migratory birds from Europe and Asia are present, adding many extra species. The breeding season after the rains brings bright plumage and active nesting.
What to Pack
