Overview
Visit the world-famous bird sanctuaries of the Great Rift Valley (Lake Bogoria, Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha), then travel south over the Mau Escarpment to Kenya's greatest concentration of game, the Masai Mara, home to the Big Five and the annual wildebeest migration (July to October).
Birding tips
- Best months for birdwatching: April, May and early June for resident birds; October to November for migratory birds.
- Best birding destinations include Lake Naivasha, Lake Nakuru, Lake Baringo, Lake Bogoria, Kakamega Forest, the Aberdare Ranges, Samburu and Buffalo Springs, Mount Kenya, Nairobi National Park, Tsavo East and West, Masai Mara, Amboseli, Arabuko Sokoke and Malindi-Watamu.
- Good birding comes down to timing (time of day and season), learning the regulars, blending in with the environment, finding good spots, patience, taking notes and practice.
