Lake Nakuru National Park is a small, scenic park in Kenya’s Rift Valley, about three hours’ drive northwest of Nairobi. It is best known for its soda lake, its birdlife and its rhinos, and it fits neatly between Nairobi, Lake Naivasha and the Maasai Mara.
Highlights
- Rhinos: the park is a fenced sanctuary where both black and white rhinos are protected, which makes sightings far more likely than in most Kenyan parks.
- Birdlife: over 400 bird species have been recorded, including pelicans, storks, eagles and, depending on water levels, flamingos along the shore.
- Big cats: lions and leopards live here, and tree-climbing lions are sometimes seen in the acacia woodland.
- Giraffe and buffalo: Rothschild’s giraffe, an endangered subspecies, is part of the park’s conservation story.
- Baboon Cliff: a viewpoint with a sweeping view over the lake and the Rift Valley floor.
A Note on the Flamingos
Flamingo numbers at Lake Nakuru change with water levels and algae growth, and in recent years they have moved between Rift Valley lakes such as Nakuru, Bogoria and Elmenteita. Do not book Nakuru only for pink shorelines. Treat flamingos as a bonus and the rhinos, leopards and scenery as the main reason to go.
Best Time to Visit
The park can be visited all year. The dry months of June to October and December to February make roads easier and animals easier to spot. The wetter months, March to May, bring lush green scenery and fewer visitors.
How Long to Stay
One night is enough for most guests, with an afternoon drive and a morning drive. Two nights works if you want to add Lake Naivasha or Lake Bogoria nearby.
Sample Routes
- Nairobi, Nakuru, Maasai Mara: a classic start to a week-long safari.
- Nairobi, Naivasha, Nakuru, Nairobi: a compact two-day option for short stays.
- Nakuru with Samburu or Ol Pejeta: a northern circuit through the central highlands.
Tips
- Start early, as the park is busiest by midday.
- Bring binoculars for birds and warm layers for the morning.
- Allow time for a stop at the viewpoints, which are some of the best photo spots in the Rift Valley.
