Tarangire National Park: the complete guide

Tarangire is northern Tanzania's elephant park, a landscape of ancient baobab trees, termite mounds and a permanent river that draws wildlife from a huge surrounding area during the dry season. It is quieter than the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, which is part of its appeal. If you love elephants and big trees, it is hard to beat.

Here is what to expect, when to go and how Tarangire fits into a northern Tanzania safari.

01

Why visit Tarangire

The Tarangire River flows all year, and in the dry season, when other water in the region disappears, huge numbers of animals gather along it. Elephant herds of dozens at a time come to drink and bathe, zebra and wildebeest move in from the surrounding plains, and predators follow.

The park is also scenic in its own right. Baobabs, some hundreds of years old, dot the landscape, and the swamps and seasonal lakes in the south attract birds. Tarangire gets fewer vehicles than the better-known parks, so sightings can feel more private.
