The Aberdare National Park protects a high mountain range in central Kenya, with moorland, bamboo forest, rivers and waterfalls. It feels very different from the open plains of the Mara or Amboseli, and it is a good fit for travellers who enjoy atmosphere and quiet wildlife watching.
The Tree Hotel Experience
The Aberdares are best known for their tree-hotel lodges, such as The Ark and Treetops. These lodges are built on stilts or in the forest canopy and overlook a waterhole and salt lick. Guests watch wildlife from comfortable viewing decks and lounges, often late into the evening, because animals arrive after dark.
- Elephants, buffalo and bushbuck are regular visitors.
- You might see giant forest hog, bongo (rare), leopard or hyena.
- Lodges usually offer a wake-up alert if a special animal appears at night.
Scenery and Waterfalls
The park is home to tall waterfalls, including Karuru and Gura, which can be seen on guided drives in the dry season. The moorland and forest are cool and often misty, so it is a good place for photographers who like moody landscapes.
Good to Know
- Access to the tree lodges is usually by a lodge-run transfer from a base hotel, so plan the timing around the lunch and check-in schedule.
- Nights can be cold. Pack a warm jacket and hat.
- Luggage space at the tree lodges is limited, so a small overnight bag is useful.
Best Time to Visit
January to March and June to October are the drier months, giving the best chance of good roads and clear views. Rain falls more heavily from March to May and in November.
