Depart Nairobi in the morning and enjoy a scenic drive along the floor of the Great Rift Valley. You will arrive at Lake Bogoria National Reserve, known as the “New Home of the Flamingo.” Check in at Lake Bogoria Spa Resort for lunch. In the afternoon, head out for a game drive and birding walk along the lake shores. Expect to see a pink carpet of Lesser Flamingos and bubbling natural hot springs, as well as the rare Greater Kudu which frequents this reserve.
Dinner and overnight at Lake Bogoria Spa Resort.
Spend the day exploring the diverse habitats of Lake Bogoria. Start with an early morning birding session to catch the light on the water and spot species like the Cape Teal and Black-necked Grebe. Unlike the busy savannah parks, Bogoria offers a peaceful atmosphere perfect for photography. You can also explore the acacia woodlands for other wildlife before returning to the resort to relax in the natural thermal spa pool.
Dinner and overnight at Lake Bogoria Spa Resort.
After breakfast, take a short drive north to Lake Baringo. As a freshwater lake in an arid region, it attracts a completely different variety of birds compared to Bogoria. Check in at Tumbili Cliff Lodge in time for lunch. In the afternoon, embark on a birding excursion along the cliffs and shores. Keep your binoculars ready for the Hemprich’s Hornbill, Jackson’s Hornbill, and the magnificent African Fish Eagle.
Dinner and overnight at Tumbili Cliff Lodge.
Wake up early for a boat ride on Lake Baringo (highly recommended for birders) or a guided nature walk. This is the best way to get close to waterbirds like the Goliath Heron, Malachite Kingfisher, and African Jacana. The lake is also home to hippos and crocodiles. In the afternoon, enjoy leisure time at the lodge watching the birds in the garden, followed by an evening bird walk to spot nocturnal species like the Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl.
Dinner and overnight at Tumbili Cliff Lodge.
Enjoy a final breakfast overlooking the lake and perhaps one last birding walk on the lodge grounds. Check out and begin your scenic drive back to Nairobi. You will arrive in the afternoon and be dropped off at your hotel, residence, or the airport, concluding your specialized birding safari.
