Hot air balloon safaris: the complete guide

A hot air balloon safari lifts you silently over the plains at sunrise, with the whole landscape unfolding below. Herds of wildebeest, elephants and giraffe look like toys, and the light is spectacular. Afterwards, you land for a bush breakfast with sparkling wine. It is one of the most memorable experiences in Africa.

Here is how a flight works and where to do it.

Tours featuring Hot Air Balloon Ride

01

What happens on the day

Pre-dawn pick-up

Your lodge collects you in the dark and drives you to the launch site, where balloons are inflated as light appears.

The flight

The pilot flies with the wind and can go from just above the treetops to several hundred metres. Baskets are divided into compartments, with seats for up to around sixteen passengers.

The landing

The chase vehicle follows the balloon and meets it at the landing site.

Champagne breakfast

A table is laid in the bush for a full breakfast, usually with sparkling wine and a celebration toast.

02

Before you fly

Book ahead

Balloon flights sell out in peak season, so book at least a few weeks in advance.

Dress in layers

It is cold on the ground before sunrise and warms up quickly.

Check restrictions

There are minimum ages and fitness requirements for getting in and out of the basket.

Be flexible

Flights can be cancelled in poor weather. Do not schedule it on your last morning.

03

Where to fly

The classic location is the Maasai Mara, where flights drift over the plains during the migration season. The Serengeti also offers flights from the Seronera area.

04

Frequently asked questions

Is ballooning safe?

Balloon operators follow strict safety rules, use experienced pilots and cancel flights in unsafe weather.
