Itinerary at a Glance
Day 1: Nairobi to Naromoru (Mount Kenya)
Your ornithological adventure begins with a morning departure from Nairobi, driving north through the fertile central highlands. As you approach the slopes of Mount Kenya, the landscape transforms into lush riverine forests. Check in at Naromoru River Lodge in time for lunch. In the afternoon, enjoy a guided nature walk along the riverbanks to spot highland species like the Hartlaub's Turaco, Giant Kingfisher, and various Sunbirds.

Day 2: Birding at Naromoru
Wake up to the crisp mountain air and the morning chorus of forest birds. Spend the day exploring the grounds and surrounding slopes of Mount Kenya. This area is a prime location for spotting the Tacazze Sunbird, Silvery-cheeked Hornbill, and the elusive African Black Duck. Enjoy a relaxed pace with ample opportunities for photography and identifying species in the lodge’s expansive gardens.

Day 3: Naromoru to Samburu National Reserve
After breakfast, bid farewell to the highlands and begin your scenic descent into the Northern Frontier District. The air warms as you cross the equator and enter the semi-arid landscape of Samburu National Reserve. Check in at Ashnil Samburu Camp for lunch by the Ewaso Nyiro River. Your first afternoon game drive introduces you to the park's unique dry-country birds, including the Buff-crested Bustard and the stunning Golden-breasted Starling.

Days 4-5: Full Days in Samburu National Reserve
Dedicate two full days to exploring the rich biodiversity of Samburu. Start with early morning drives to catch active predators and ground birds. Samburu is famous for the Somali Ostrich, Vulturine Guineafowl, and the Kori Bustard. Along the river, look for the Palm-nut Vulture and African Fish Eagle. You will also track the "Samburu Special Five" mammals: Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy’s Zebra, Beisa Oryx, Gerenuk, and Somali Ostrich. Enjoy leisure time at the camp during the midday heat before evening game drives.

Day 6: Samburu to Nairobi
Enjoy a final early morning game drive or a relaxed breakfast overlooking the river, watching elephants come to drink. Check out and begin your return journey to Nairobi, passing through the scenic wheat farms of Timau. You will be dropped off at your hotel, residence, or the airport, concluding your specialized birding safari.
